Lalit Narayan Mithila University  was established on August 5, 1972. Vide University notification No. 6760-7244 dated 28 April, 1980 University was renamed as Lalit Narayan Mithila University from Mithila University. The university is an outcome of long cherished desire of the people of Mithila. In favour of the establishment of a modern University at Darbhanga eminent academicians like Dr. R. C. Mazumdar, Dr. Amarnath Jha, Dr. Sunil Kumar Chatterjee, Dr. A. S. Altekar and many other had expressed their views. On the floors of the state legislature and in the parliament the demand for establishing University was voiced time and again.
