Sikkim University was came into existence in 2006 under an Act of Parliament of India. It is in Gangtok. At Samdur, 6th Mile, Tadong main administrative office of the University is located. Bagdogra and New Jalpaiguri are he nearest airport and railway station respectively. At Yangang in South Sikkim the permanent campus of the University is coming up. About 56 kilometres (35 mi) from Gangtok the campus is expected to be built at Yangang in South Sikkim district. M. S. Swaminathan; Mahendra P. Lama was the first vice chancellor.

In 2008 the university started from four departments- Peace and Conflict Studies and Management, Microbiology, International Relations/Politics,  and Social System and Anthropology. Along with non-traditional courses that are unique and related to the state including subjects like border studies, mountain studies and hill music and culture university offers traditional courses in humanities, physical and life sciences and forestry.
