It was a landmark day in the history of Rajouri when Government Degree College Rajouri was declared open on 6th of June 1981 by Jammu and Kashmir Government. It was a generation gap of 26 years between the openings of Govt. Degree College Rajouri then to its counterpart District Headquarter Poonch 1955. The secular character of the college has proved to be teaching consequence of rich traditions and a beacon of light not only at state level but also at the National level.

Government Degree College Rajouri is located at a small beautiful plateau at village Kheora, three and half kilometers to the north of City of Kings Rajouri town. College campus gives a picturesque look in the backdrop of snow caped Pir - Pinjal Mountains of the Middle Himalayas in the far north. A monument of Mian Hathu's times Dhani Dhar Fort lies just to the east, in the west lies the Darhal Tawi a source tributary of Manawar Tawi and historic Rajouri town in the south. College has gratitude at 33.25°N latitudes and 69.30°E longitude. College has been constructed at a plateau spreading its grandeur of buildings, lawns and grounds over almost 100 kanals of land, which houses three separate hostels for boys and girls and staff quarters apart from administrative block, lecture theatres, well equipped laboratories and a multi-purpose Hall to carryout extracurricular activities. The College has rich library having a collection of over 40000 volumes the College also has two departmental libraries for its PG Department of Chemistry and Computer Application, having about 2000 books. Moreover, latest journals, magazines, periodicals etc are also subscribed. In addition to the University sub-office, the college has three Distance Education Study Centres functioning under the aegis of Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi, Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu, Jammu and the Mualana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad for those students who cannot seek regular admissions.

The College was accredited with "A" grade by NAAC in 2014. The College has constituted an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as a post accreditation quality sustenance measure.
