Set up in June, 1968 as a little core in the Geology Department, Delhi University, the Institute was moved to Dehradun during April, 1976. 

Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun is a self-sufficient research foundation of the Department of the Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. 

At first named as the Institute of Himalayan Geology, it was renamed as the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in memory of its organizer, the late Prof. D. N. Wadia (F.R.S. also, National Professor), in thankfulness to his commitments to the geography of the Himalayas. During the last 25 year the Institute has developed into a focal point of greatness in Himalayan Geology and is perceived as a National Laboratory of universal notoriety with very much prepared labs and other infrastructural offices for undertaking propelled level of research in the nation. In the early long periods of the Institute, the real push of the exploration action was coordinated towards remote zones with troublesome rocky territory and persevering conditions, just as where the land structure and geographical information were inadequate. In the first place the Arunachal Himalaya, Higher Himalaya of Kumaun and Lahaul-Spiti and Indus-suture of Ladakh and Karakoram were taken as need zones for geographical research. Presently the push of the examination has been centered around some specific zones of national just as universal importance in both the western and eastern Himalayas.
