The College of Air Warfare (CAW) appeared on 01 July 1959, as the School of Land and Air Warfare (SLAW), at New Delhi, subsequent to accepting its endorsement by the President of India (Est. No. 2164 A). The approval, anyway was to be in actuality for a time of one year just and the impromptu authorisation was to be checked on thusly. The SLAW moved to its present area, Secunderabad, on 25 July 1959. This area had been emptied by the Controller of Defense Accounts and was taken over from the MES. Air Cmde KL Sondhi was the main Commandant of SLAW. Around then, the school didn't have the status of a self-bookkeeping unit and was subject to Air Force Station Hyderabad, for managerial and residential administrations. The SLAW was officially initiated by Defense serve, Sri VK Krishna Menon on 03 September 1959 with the beginning of its first standard course. 

The SLAW albeit an Air Force foundation, was practically a bury administration foundation, giving scholastic guidance to Army and Air Force officials. Other than Air Force work force, the perpetual staff of the school incorporated various Army officials. At first, just Army and Air Force officials were prepared on basic conventions in Offensive Air Support, Air Transport Support and Air Defense. On 25 November 1967, with the presentation of Naval parts of fighting, the School of Land and Air Warfare was renamed as Joint Air Warfare School (JAWS). 

On 09 November 1975, the President of India authorized the development of IAF's College of Air Warfare (CAW). CAW at first was a piece of Joint Air Warfare School and was set up in three phases. Prior, government assent was acquired to prepare three F (P) officials with the RAF College (Department of Air Warfare) at Cranwell for four months (12 July 1975 to 12 November 1975). On their arrival, they detailed an arrangement for the development of IAF's College of Air Warfare. During stage I of the development, (10 November 1975 to 10 January 1976), a phone worked at Air Headquarters that completed arrangements for a venture report and drew up schedule for short courses for DS assigns. 

During stage II (11 January 1976 to 30 March 1976), a similar unit started incidentally working at AF Station Begumpet. Under stage III, on 02 November 1976, JAWS was redesignated as the College of Air Warfare, and its wings were renamed as Department of Joint Air Warfare (DJW) and Department of Air Warfare (DAW). Both these divisions were later blended.
