The National Sugar Institute (NSI) set up in 1936, is associated with research, preparing and warning administrations to the sugar and united industry, and capacities under the Department of Food and Public Distribution of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Based on the above suggestions, the Government of India assumed control over the Sugar Section of the HARCOURT BUTLER TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, Kanpur and built up the IMPERIAL INSTITUTE OF SUGAR TECHNOLOGY, Kanpur in October, 1936. The Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology was put under the authoritative control of the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research situated in the grounds of HBTI, Kanpur. Upon the development of Indian Central Sugarcane Committee in 1944 the managerial control of the Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology was moved to the said Committee.
