Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) is a main research establishment in Nainital, Uttarakhand which spends significant time in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences. A self-ruling body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, the organization is arranged at Manora Peak (1,951 m (6,401 ft)), around 9 km from Nainital, a prominent slope station. The galactic observatory is available to people in general during working days on evenings. For night seeing notwithstanding, three - four days on evening glow evenings are fixed and earlier consent is required. The foundation was begun on 20 April 1954 under the supervision of Dr.A.N.Singh as Uttar Pradesh State Observatory (UPSO) in the premises of the Govt. Sanskrit College, by and by known as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. With the making of the State of Uttarakhand on 9 Nov 2000, and as a result of its land area inside the limits of Uttarakhand, UPSO went under the regulatory control of the new government and was re-initiated as the State Observatory (SO). Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) was its new name when it went under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India as an independent body on 22 March 2004.
