In the year 1965, the Government of Tamil Nadu Started Periyar EVR College in Tiruchirappalli, the focal piece of Tamilnadu, naming it after the extraordinary scholar and social reformer Thanthai Periyar. 50 years back, advanced education was past the scope of the abused and monetarily underestimated more youthful age in and around Tiruchirappalli. To provide food the instructive imperatives, Thanthai Periyar, the visionary head of Justice Party and a notable social reformer of Tamil Nadu, liberally gave 9.65 sections of land of his property and Rs.3.5 lakhs, and mentioned the Tamil Nadu Government to begin a College at Tiruchirappalli. Using the altruistic assistance of Thanthai Periyar, the Government of Tamil Nadu began a Government College at Race Course Road, Khaja Nagar, Tiruchirappalli during the scholastic year 1965-1966, and named it 'Periyar EVR College' out of appreciation for the pioneer. The then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Honorable M. Bhakthavatchalam introduced the College on 24.08.1965. 

Presently, our College grounds is extended to 52.62 sections of land blessed with satisfactory study halls and infrastructural offices. About ninety percentstudents of this College have a place with the abused and monetarily underestimated areas, who hail from provincial and urban foundation. A large number of them are original students. Periyar E.V.R. College plays out the job of inspiring the poor understudies by giving them all encompassing advanced education and form them as respectable people with obligations towards their families, society and eventually the country. Because of the magnanimous administrations and validity of the scholarly world, the College achieved self-sufficient status during 1998-1999. Presently we offer 15 Under Graduate and 16 Post Graduate projects notwithstanding 14 M.Phil programs. Thirteen of our specializations have been perceived as potential Research Centers by the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. Unique Shift System (SSS) was presented in the year 2006 by the State Government Policy of Education with the accessible foundation.
