In the year 1868, Rev. James Emlyn from New Castle, U.K. a LMS teacher purchased the grounds where the College is found at this point. Rev. Robert Sinclair, who succeeded Rev. Emlyn in the year 1910, constructed a home and began a Boarding College on the grounds estimating 32 sections of land. 

After autonomy the long felt requirement for a College at Marthandam brought about the beginning of the Christian College in June 1964 by the Kanyakumari Diocese of the Church of South India. The Executive Committee of the Diocese, which met on 04-01-1964, depended the duty of raising assets for the structures expected to an adhoc panel comprising of Messrs. N. Dennis, Ex. MP (Convener), G.A. Ambrose, J. Nesamony, P.S. Wilson and Rev. M. Amose. The Diocese set apart adequate degree of wet grounds as blessing to fulfill the University necessity. The general population in and around Marthandam, the guardians, understudies and individuals from the educating and non-training staff looked into the development of the College and contributed generous sums at various occasions for its improvement. 

With the authorization of the Madras University the Pre-University course was begun in 1964 with 171 understudies. The College was inauguarted on sixth Aug. 1964 by the then Bishop Rt. Rev. I.R.H. Gnanadason, with Dr.John D.K. Sundar Singh as the main Principal. 

In June 1965, the College presented college classes with Mathematics, History and Economics as significant subjects. From the year 1966, the College was an associated organization of the Madurai University which was later renamed as Madurai Kamaraj University. The College turned into a Post Graduate Institution in the year 1980-81. 

In June 1984, the College was re-named as Nesamony Memorial Christian College in acknowledgment of the yeoman administrations rendered by the late Thiru.A. Nesamony M.A.,B.L. to the Kanyakumari Diocese of the Church of South India. In the year 1991, the College in light of the fact that a constituent College of the recently framed Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. In the brilliant development of the College, God has guided and favored us hugely. With confidence in celestial direction and co-activity from people in general, it is trusted that the College will develop further into a productive focus of learning. A Ph.D. Research focus in History was begun in the year 1997 in the standard plan.
