The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a head establishment committed to look into in cosmology, astronomy and related material science. It follows its sources back to an observatory set up in 1786 at Madras which from the year 1792 started to officially work at its Nungambakkam premises as the Madras Observatory. In 1899, the observatory moved to Kodaikanal. In the year 1971, the Kodaikanal Observatory turned into a self-ruling society, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The home office were moved to Bengaluru into its present grounds in Koramangala in 1975. Today, subsidized by the Department of Science and Technology, the Institute positions as a chief organization dedicated to research and instruction of space science and material science in the nation. The primary watching offices of the Institute are situated at Kodaikanal, Kavalur, Gauribidanur and Hanle.
The Kodaikanal Observatory has for over a century been the chief focus of movement in observational sun based and barometrical material science. The Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur has been the principle optical observatory of the Institute for evening cosmology since the late 1960s. Here, a 2 meter Himalayan Chandra Telescope has been introduced in 2001. A seven-unit High Altitude Gamma Ray (HAGAR) telescope is in task at the Hanle site.
