Isabella Thoburn College is the principal Christian College for ladies in South Asia. Its originator, Ms. Isabella Thoburn, was the primary American lady Methodist teacher to sail to India in 1869, after the Women's Foreign Missionary Society (WFMS), of the Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Boston to support the reason for ladies in India. 

The source of the school was in a school for young ladies opened by Ms. Isabella Thoburn on 18 April 1870 out of one room in the downtown area bazaar of Aminabad. There were then only six young ladies. By 1871, the school had extended and moved to possess a house named Lal Bagh, the place of the treasurer of the last Nawab of Awadh. On 12 July 1886, Miss Thoburn's school was renamed as the Lucknow Women's College and started to instruct Fine Arts classes under the supervision of the University of Calcutta. In 1894, this association was relinquished for another one with Allahabad University. 

After Miss Thoburn's passing in an assault of cholera in 1901, the College, still at Lal Bagh, was given its present name in her respect. In 1923, during the Principalship of Ms. Florence Nichols, the College turned into a different organization and moved to the Chand Bagh domain of right around 32 sections of land, where it has stayed until the present day. Chand Bagh signifies "Moon Garden". The property was at one time a regal nursery. The College's Principal, Sarah Chakko (1905–1954) was the main lady President of the World Council of Churches.
