The Department of Legal Studies, as a separate department of the govt, came into existence on 07.01.1953 to boost the standard of legal education in TamilNadu. The Madras Law College was the sole College beneath its management at that point. to satisfy the long felt wants of the southern districts of Tamilnadu, the govt set to ascertain a Law College at Madurai in 1974. The blue print of the faculty was ready by the then Director of Legal Studies, Prof.A.Palaniswamy and Government Law College attached to the Madurai Kamaraj University started performing from the tutorial year 1974-75. The initial and structure arrangements of the faculty were done by faculty member.C.Rajaraman M.A.LL.B(Cantab) Bar-at-Law, then Director of legal studies incharge United Nations agency was appointed by the govt as Special officer for the aim.
