In 1852 at the direction of the Governor, Sir Henry Pottinger, a Government highschool was swollen into the Presidency faculty. Mr. John Bruce Norton UN agency was appointed because the 1st academician of law in 1855, delivered his lectures at the Presidency faculty. Till 1884, there was only 1 academician of Law within the Presidency faculty. In 1884, to supplement lectures by tutorials, a second academician was appointed. To him was entrusted the tutorial work. The theme was placed on trial for 2 years. Since it verified successful, it had been continued for 2 additional years from Ist Jan 1886. Mr.H.B. Grigg, the Director of Public Instruction evinced keen interest in rising the standing of the legal education. In 1885 Mr. Justice Muthusamy Ayyar gave his heat support to the proposal.
