Cherrapunjee or privately called 'Sohra', the wettest spot earth, has been the motivation for the name. These undulating green covered slopes were nostalgically called by the British as the "Scotland of the East".
Preceding 1982, there was no school in the Sohra Civil Sub-Division which is an instructively in reverse region. Arranged 52 KM from Shillong, the State Capital, Sohra Civil Sub-Division is a fringe territory with Bangladesh. Sohra College began when it didn't have anything of its own neither land nor building. In 1989 the school was designated a plot of land estimating 8330.7 Square Meter by the Executive Committee of the Dorbar of Sirdar Elaka Saitsohpen, Cherrapunjee. The development of structure was begun throughout the winter of 1989 and finished till late 1990. In spite of the fact that classes in this grounds began in 1991 yet development for expansion of the structure so that there will be arrangement for staff regular room, understudy basic room, library perusing room and so on were proceeded. It was after the provincialisation of the school on 19-01-2009 that the Government of Meghalaya considered this current grounds as brief grounds and correspondingly a plot of land estimating 15.56 sections of land was apportioned by the Disaster and Revenue Department, Government of Meghalaya on 26-May-2015. From 2009 onwards the Government had halted the expansion and redesign of the school with the intension of moving to the lasting grounds (15.56 sections of land) yet till now no indication of development. In this manner with the current framework the school face the issue of conceding understudies even from its own territory.
Sohra Government College has a qualification of being the main degree school in the entire Sohra Civil Sub-Division which includes a populace of more than 1.5 lakh.
