Government College of Teacher Education was set up as College of Education in the year 1952. In the first place it was subsidiary to Mysore University, Mysore. Later on with the foundation of Mangalore University in the year 1982 its association was moved to Mangalore University. In the year 1993 the College was moved up to College of Teacher Education under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Teacher Education. The CTE offers one year Bachelor of Education degree courses that readies the auxiliary teachers.
The CTE is arranged in the city of Mangalore which is a beach front town known for its businesses and instructive establishments. It is a main port city and has a worldwide air terminal. The CTE spreads regions of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu. Of these Udupi and Dakshina Kannada are the waterfront locale though Kodagu is a sloping region commanded region in the western ghats.
