The establishment was begun in the year 1866 as a Rate School as it depended for its fund upon an instructive rate which was around then required by the Local Government. In 1871 the neighborhood Fund Act came into power and instructive rates were abrogated, the school was taken over by the Local Fund Board. 


In 1877, the school turned into a Government High School and in 1884, it was given over by Government to the administration of the Municipal Council, Government paying the net charges of the school. In January1888 the secondary school was raised to the position of a Second Grade College and was associated to the University of Madras. The Municipal Council made plans to work the foundation on the compensation award framework from first April 1894. 


Another square of structure was raised in 1901. In 1913, an inn with a lovely quadrangle and outfitted settlement for 100 understudies was opened and in the following year further expansion to the school structures was finished. The school was taken over by the Government of Madras on Ist April 1919 and raised to the First Grade from Ist July 1925 with arrangement for showing History and Philosophy. In1939, the school was subsidiary for educating B.Sc in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In July 1950 B.Sc Courses in Botany and Zoology was presented. Another Science square was finished in February, 1951. 


With the presentation of the multi year Degree course the middle of the road course was annulled and the Pre-University course was begun in 1956. Because of the arrangement of Linguistic Provinces, the school was subsidiary to the University of Kerala in 1957. Post-graduate course in English Literature and Statistics and pre-proficient course in Engineering and Non-Engineering were begun around the same time. Postgraduate course in Zoology was begun in 1958 and Physics in1960. Pre-Professional courses nullified in1966 and in 1967 understudies were admitted to the principal group of Pre-Degree class with business subjects. The M.A course in Economics and M.Sc in Botany were begun 1970, M. Sc Chemistry and B.A Tamil in1978 and M.A History in 1979. Vocationalisation of Degree Courses was presented under UGC help with B.Sc Zoology and B.Com in 1996. 


The College praised its century on an award scale in February 1968 dependent on the beginning of rate school, again it observed Centenary in the year 1989 dependent on the beginning of the school. After the execution of UGC Act in1990 the Last Batch of Pre-Degree was delinked in 2000. The school is at present partnered to the University of Calicut with 10 Post-Graduate Courses and 15 Under Graduate Courses in Arts and Science subjects and perceived as a Center of Excellence by the Government of Kerala.
