The historical backdrop of horticultural instruction in Kerala can be followed back to the year 1896 when a plan was advanced in the recent Travancore State to prepare a couple of youngsters in logical agribusiness at the Demonstration Farm, Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram, by and by, the Cropping Systems Research Center under Kerala Agricultural University. Farming was presented as a discretionary subject in the center school classes in the State in 1922 when an Agricultural Middle School was begun at Aluva, Ernakulam District. The prevalence and convenience of this school prompted the beginning of comparable organizations at Kottarakkara and Konni in 1928 and 1931 separately.
Farming was later presented as a discretionary subject for Intermediate Course in 1953. In 1955, the past Government of Travancore-Cochin began the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy, Thrissur for conferring advanced education in farming and veterinary sciences, separately. These organizations were brought under the direct authoritative control of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Animal Husbandry, individually. With the arrangement of Kerala State in 1956, these two schools were associated to the University of Kerala. The post-graduate projects prompting M.Sc. (Ag), M.V.Sc. furthermore, Ph.D. degrees were begun in 1961, 1962 and 1965 individually.
On the proposal of the Second National Education Commission (1964-66) headed by Dr. D.S. Kothari, the then Chairman of the University Grants Commission, one Agricultural University in each State was built up. The State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) were set up in India as an essential piece of the National Agricultural Research System to give the truly necessary catalyst to Agriculture Education and Research in the Country. Therefore the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) was built up on 24th February 1971 by goodness of the Act 33 of 1971 and began working on first February 1972. The Kerala Agricultural University is the fifteenth in the arrangement of the SAUs.
