Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, one of the most established medicinal schools in North India and initial one in the Jammu and Kashmir (J and K) State is at present in its 54th year of birth. GMC was built up in year 1959 withfew room dispensary at banks of Jhelumnear current LD emergency clinic .GMC has emergedas chief therapeutic school of thecountry. Aside from sustaining Medicalprofessional over after few decades.GMCis giving a recuperating contact to majorityof populace of state. It was in 1959that Col. G V S Murthy assumed responsibility as thefirst Principal of GMC. Life systems andphysiology were the first departmentsstarted in the dispensary found nearcurrent LD emergency clinic. Two years later,college was moved to the present daylocation at Karan Nagar. On 25th ofaugust 1961 GMC was formallyinaugurated by then Prime Ministry of the State ofJammu and Kashmir Mr. BakshiGhulam Mohammad.
In 1966 PG Courses in Pre-Clinicalsubjects where begun it was in 1968 Postgraduation course in clinicalsubjects got going in GMC. With time govt.Medical school began trainingof Para-Medical staff like Radio-graphers,Lab-Technicians Lab-Attendants ,Pharmacist , Nurses and clean Inspectors.
In 1970's and 1980's are considered tobe the brilliant period in the history ofGovt. medicinal school. As of now GMCSrinagar had understudies fromvarious phases of India as well as from foreigncountries also.
