The Government College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu (GCET) was set up in the year 1994 under All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) standards vide Notification No.F-18-1/93-AICTE/910 dated: April 30, 1993 and is associated to University of Jammu, Jammu. The introduction of the school was finished by the then His Excellency, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, General K.V.Krishna Rao on fifth October, 1994 at Old University Campus, Canal Road, Jammu. This was the main Institute of its sort in Jammu locale. 

New Campus of GCET has additionally come up on a territory of 869 Kanals of land at Chak Bhalwal, Jammu close Amb Ghrota which is 22 Kms. away from Old University Campus, Canal Road, Jammu. The development work under Phase-I including Departments of Computer Engineering and Civil Engineering other than Common Lecture Halls and Hostel Block has been executed by JKPCC Ltd., The Construction Work for Mechanical Engineering Block and Workshop Block has likewise been finished under Phase-II though the development work of Administrative Block and Library Block under Phase-II is going on. The College New Campus was introduced by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister Jenab Ghulam Nabi Azad on August 12, 2006 and every one of the divisions are completely utilitarian at New Campus, Chak Bhalwal, Jammu. 

Nine Academic Departments are engaged with the Teaching/Training work from first to eighth Semesters for example Five concerned Engineering Departments and Four Applied Sciences Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities and Social Sciences. 

Out of 21 groups conceded in GCET from 1994 to 2014 ,so far 17 bunches of understudies upto 2010 have gone out from this Institute while understudies of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 individually are concentrating the courses in B.E seventh, fifth, third and first semesters. 

The Examination plan for all Semesters (Regular/Supplementary) are being led in discussion with Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu, Jammu twice in a year according to scholastic calender of the College/University. 

The Boy's Hostel has been begun in the new grounds. The development of SC/ST Girls Hostel under AICTE and State Govt. Subsidizing has been begun by the JKPCC.
