The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy was established by Rev. Fr. Jean Pierre Medaille sj in 1650 at Le Puy, France. St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous), a Catholic minority establishment, is overseen by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy, France. Fr. Medaille was conceived in 1610 at Carcassonne, France, and was instructed in a Jesuit College in Toulouse. He joined the Society of Jesus (sj) in 1637 and turned into a minister. The Founder's otherworldliness depends on the lessons of St. Ignatius of Loyola who laid much accentuation on deciphering the genuine Love of God, into influencing the lives of individuals to improve things. Fr. Medaille too planned that the Love of God be imparted to all individuals paying little heed to their group, statement of faith, race, and socio-social foundations. Towards this end Fr. Medaille shaped a Society of Women Religious who might make known the unfathomable love and leniency of God, by their life of supplication and Union with God and take part in works that would most profit poor people and the penniless – profoundly and tangibly. In this way the Society which later formed into a Congregation, appeared on the fifteenth October, 1650.
