The Department of Jute and Fibre Technology (DJFT), a Technology Department of the University of Kolkata erst referred to as Institute of Jute Technology (IJT), is set at thirty five, Ballygunge Circular Road, metropolis – 700 019 in South Kolkata field of the University of Kolkata (commonly referred to as Ballygunge Science faculty field ). Institute of Jute Technology was supported on tenth March 1951, put together by the University of Kolkata and Indian Jute Mill’s Association (IJMA) on a chunk of land of the University of Kolkata given by Tarak Nath Palit Trust. the most objective of this Institute was to cater education and coaching to meet the HRD wants of jute and allied fibre sector for the development of qualified technical force and coaching of mill-personnel for the Indian Jute Mills as suggested by the “Appointment Board” of the University of Kolkata, means back in 1940. The monetary expenditure was at the start maintained by the IJMA and their member mills of IJT up to 1982. Jute Manufactures Development Council (JMDC), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of Asian nation came forward to assist this Institute financially at the start on an adhoc basis since 1982 and on 5 year MOU basis from 1991-92. National Jute Board (NJB), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, [earlier referred to as Jute Manufactures Development Council (JMDC)], has provided continued funding to the present Institute through the note of Understanding with the approval of the Ministry of Textiles. Recently University of Kolkata has come to the fore to require monetary responsibility for running this Institute with the consent of State Govt. of the province, educational activity Department. consequently on and from first Gregorian calendar month, 2011, this Institute has been reborn into a Technology Department of the University of Kolkata with the concurrence from the government. of the province and named because of the “Department of Jute and Fibre Technology (DJFT), Institute of Jute Technology, University of Kolkata.”
