Mother M.St.Anne was the Principal of the College from 1958 to 1986.Her tenure was marked with the cultivation of values and uncompromising faith. The vision of our torch bearers was given life and shape, so for us, she remains a bearer of light, a glorious shepherdess in whose care, we were disciplined dreamers who felt that the weight of the history of the college rested on us. She set before us exceptionally high standards and kept encouraging us to dream, to aspire, to “seize the dayâ€, as she would say, gazing at us with a twinkle in her greenish-grey eyes. In the words of William Butler Yeats “Education is not filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.†It is our teachers, the torch bearers of the society, who each day does their best to ignite the fire of learning in the young, inquisitive minds that are yearning for knowledge. True to the motto of the college ‘Virtue’ & ‘Knowledge’ our teachers leave no stone unturned to create a congenial environment for learning within the portals of the college. Run by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions or RNDM (Religieux Notre Dame des Missions), an international religious congregation, Saint Mary’s College, Shillong, a Catholic Church Institution of higher learning was established in 1937. Historically, the life of Saint Mary’s College has its umbilical cord connected to the parent institute of Saint Mary’s Convent which in turn had its headquarter in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
