Angul, one of the districts of Orissa, located in the heart of the state. It indeed maintains a rich heritage and spiritual tradition. Chhendipada, known as Uparbish, is one of the prominent Blocks of the district. Mostly populated by peasants and lower middle class folk, it was lacking a due podium for higher education. With the untiring efforts of sage Balakrishna Pattnaik, a lifelong bachelor and a noted social worker and devoted politician, and the able support of some of the local elites like Late Balinkeswar Pradhan, Late Purna Chandra Pradhan, Sri Balakrishna Pradhan, Sri Pathani Garnaik, Sri Sudhakar Garnaik, Sri Janak Garnaik, Bapujee College, Chhendipada, now one of the oldest of its kind in the district, came to existence in the year 1976. Noted poet and one of the worthy sons Angul has ever produced, Padmashree Radhamohan Garnaik, who laid the Foundation Stone of the college also involved himself to spearhead the noble endeavour and served as the first President of its Governing Body. He justly named the campus of the serene scholastic entity 'Saraswata Nagar' meaning the holy shrine of Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom. This marked the beginning the real growth of this college and since then the development of this institution has been phenomenal over the years. It started functioning with just 71 students in its rolls and just 5 teachers comprising its staff at the initial stage. The college, now in its 35th year inception is proud of more than 1200 students in its lap and ably managed by 25 teachers (besides there are more than 10 teachers temporarily engaged to man the faculty aspect.) and 33 non-teaching personnel. A compact area of 36 Acres is owned by the college to run its business.The institution has expanded in all possible directions providing teaching facilities in Arts, commerce, Science and Vocational at +2 stage and Arts, Commerce and Science at +3 Degree stage.Honours teaching facilities are available in Arts and Science upto undergraduate classes.The establishment of Bapujee College has not only added new dimensions to the aspirations of the people of the area but has also facilitated the spread of education to every corner of the districts and beyond this district too. The Library of the college contains nearly 13275 books in the general section covering all the subjects. It also subscribes to the leading journals and magazines to cater to the needs students, teachers and researchers.With the basic assistance and development grants (from the university Grants Commission) this collge has developed in different directions.After the NAAC peer team visit to this college in March-2007. Consequently, this institution has beeb awarded 'C++' Grade.
