Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology Overview

Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Sambalpur, started its journey in 1997 as the College of Engineering & Technology, the first engineering institute in western Odisha. Over the years it has grown step‑by‑step – adding B.Tech. streams in 2002, launching M.Tech. and MCA programmes in 2008 and earning the AICTE’s Centre of Excellence tag. In 2018 the college was upgraded to a deemed‑to‑be university and renamed after the freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai, gaining the freedom to design its own curriculum and forge industry partnerships.

From 2021 to 2023 the university broadened its horizons by introducing B.Pharm, B.Arch, B.Des, BBA and a suite of M.Sc. courses, and set up a Technology Innovation Hub under the NIDAS programme. The 27th anniversary in 2024 was marked by a smart campus – solar‑powered labs, a digital library with more than 1.2 million e‑resources and a Centre for Sustainable Technologies.

Reputation – VSSUT sits in the 101‑150 band of the NIRF 2023 engineering ranking and in the 351‑400 bracket of THE Asia 2023. It has an ‘A’ grade NAAC accreditation (2022) and was highlighted in the NIRF 2024 report for outstanding research impact (citation index 0.86). The university’s strength rests on three pillars: a curriculum that follows AICTE and NBA directives, a vibrant research ecosystem with over 250 patents and 35 funded projects, and a social‑impact drive that brings renewable‑energy and water‑management solutions to the rural districts of Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Bargarh.

Academics – The institute runs four main faculties: Engineering & Technology (1,800 seats), Pharmacy & Allied Health (300), Architecture & Design (150) and Management & Sciences (400). Integrated M.Tech. pathways in Robotics and Data Science started in 2022, and a pilot dual‑degree B.Tech.–MBA programme with IIM Sambalpur began in 2023.

Infrastructure – Spread over 300 acres on the banks of the Mahanadi, the campus boasts 70+ labs, a 16‑TFLOPS super‑computer centre, a nanotech lab, a 120 000‑volume library plus 1.2 million e‑titles, eight boys’ and six girls’ hostels for 4 500 students, an Olympic‑size stadium, a swimming pool and a Ministry‑of‑AYUSH‑recognised Yoga & Meditation centre.

Placements – In 2023‑24, 89 % of eligible students were placed, with the highest CTC of ₹28 LPA and an average of ₹7.2 LPA. Recruiters range from TCS, Infosys and L&T to Mahindra, Reliance, Siemens and a host of promising start‑ups from the Odisha Startup Hub. Summer internships of up to ₹1.5 Lakhs are coordinated through the Industry‑Academia Partnership Cell. The university has signed MoUs with more than 85 organisations, including NASA‑India, IBM Research, DAAD and JICA.

Value proposition – Tuition fees for B.Tech. programmes are modest (₹65,000‑₹1.20 Lakhs per year) with scholarships covering up to 80 % of the cost. Graduates walk out job‑ready, thanks to a curriculum that blends technical depth with soft‑skill training, AI, IoT and PLC exposure. Research output appears in IEEE, Elsevier and Springer, while the incubation centre has nurtured 15 start‑ups with total funding of ₹3.2 Crores. Community projects have touched over 200 000 rural residents, underscoring VSSUT’s role as a catalyst for regional development. Looking ahead, the AI & Robotics Research Park (expected 2026) and a strategic tie‑up with ISRO’s Satellite Communication Division position VSSUT to become a premier hub for advanced technology education in Eastern India.
