What is a Ph.D.?

Ph.D. is a postgraduate doctoral degree which is available in all subjects and are normally the highest level of academic degree a person can achieve. Ph.D. stands for 'Doctor of Philosophy' in which philosophy refers as Philo (friend or lover of) Sophia (wisdom). Candidates who complete an original thesis offering a significant new contribution to knowledge in their subject are awarded by the Ph.D. Degree.

Eligibility for Ph.D

• Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master’s degree with at least 55% of marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade from any recognized university or institution.
• A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories.
• Candidates who possess an M.Phil. Degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 – point scale are also eligible to apply for admission.

The selection of the candidates to the Ph.D. programmes is done on the basis of entrance test and interview conducted by the university.
