National Institute of Design Overview

The National Institute of Design – Madhya Pradesh (NID MP) started its journey in July 2023, when the first batch of B.Des. students walked into a brand‑new, green‑field campus spread over 120 acres in the Bhopal‑Berasia corridor. Built through a public‑private partnership that pulled together funds from the Centre, the Madhya Pradesh government and industry giants like Tata Elxsi, Godrej Design Studio and Mahindra & Mahindra, the institute blends sustainable architecture with cutting‑edge labs and collaborative studios. Within a year it has carved a niche for itself: it ranks 6th in the NIRF design list (2024), boasts a 94 % placement rate within six months of graduation, and has signed 35 active MoUs with design firms and corporates – figures that sit comfortably alongside its parent institute in Ahmedabad. Its Design Thinking Lab, in partnership with IIT Indore, tackles human‑centred solutions for healthcare and agriculture, underscoring NID MP’s focus on socially relevant design. The campus offers modern studios, 3D‑printing and CNC labs, a textile workshop, a digital media hub and a Design Museum that displays student work alongside regional crafts. Hostels for men (120) and women (100) provide Wi‑Fi, mess facilities, a gym and a Women’s Resource Centre. The Placement Cell reports average packages of ₹12–20 lakhs per annum, with recruiters such as Adobe, L’Oréal India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance Industries. A Design Incubation Centre also backs start‑ups with seed funding up to ₹15 lakhs. Positioned at the heart of India, NID MP draws on Madhya Pradesh’s rich tribal crafts and nearby manufacturing corridors, delivering a design education that is both globally benchmarked and locally resonant.

National Institute of Design Courses & Academic Programs

National Institute of Design – Madhya Pradesh Campus, Bhopal, operates under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and follows the autonomous NID model that began in 1961. The institute offers a full spectrum of programmes – undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral – all anchored in the “Design + Technology + Business” philosophy.

Undergraduate (UG)
Four‑year B.Des. degrees are available in Visual Communication, Product Design, Textile & Apparel Design, Interaction (Communication) Design and Interior & Exhibition Design. Each programme admits 30‑45 students per intake, requires 10+2 with at least 60 % (PCM/PCB or equivalent) and a successful performance in the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT). The curriculum starts with core design foundations – drawing, modelling, colour theory and design thinking – before moving into specialised studio projects, industry‑driven internships (mandatory three‑month stint in the third year) and a final year capstone with a corporate partner. Exchange semesters with other NID campuses and overseas schools are also on offer.

Postgraduate (PG)
Two‑year M.Des. programmes include Integrated Design, Design Management, Sustainable Product Design, UX & Service Design and Textile & Fashion Innovation. Admission requires a relevant bachelor’s degree (minimum 55 %), the NID PG entrance test (or GATE/NET scores where applicable) and an interview. Students work in research‑based studios, use advanced tools like laser cutters, CNC routers, AR/VR labs and textile labs, and collaborate on live projects with firms such as Tata Motors, Godrej and Infosys. The final semester culminates in a defended design thesis or a business‑focused design plan.

Doctoral (Ph.D.)
The institute admits up to 12 Ph.D. scholars per year in design research across five focus areas: Design Innovation & Strategy, Human‑Centred Interaction, Sustainable Materials & Circular Design, Digital Fabrication & Smart Materials, and Social Impact & Inclusive Design. Candidates must hold a master’s degree (M.Des., M.Tech., M.Sc.) with at least 55 % and clear the NID Ph.D. entrance test (or hold GATE/NET qualification). The programme spans 3‑5 years, beginning with a year of coursework, followed by a comprehensive exam, proposal defence, conference paper, and finally a 200‑page dissertation defended before an internal and external panel. Ph.D. scholars receive a nominal tuition fee of ₹1,20,000, a monthly stipend of ₹31,000 and a research grant up to ₹2 lakhs per annum.
