Majuli University of Culture Overview

Majuli University of Culture (MUC) was set up by the Assam Government in 2017 as India’s first university devoted solely to the study, preservation and promotion of the island’s unique cultural legacy. The idea grew out of a series of “Riverine Cultures of South Asia” conferences held between 2009 and 2015, where scholars warned that the intangible heritage of the Ahom, Mising, Kaibarta and other indigenous groups was under threat. In 2016 the Assam Legislative Assembly enacted the Majuli University of Culture Act, giving the university an autonomous statutory status. Prof. (Dr.) Bhupen Hazarika – an anthropologist, not the legendary singer – became the founding Vice‑Chancellor and oversaw the building of a 75‑acre campus on reclaimed flood‑plain land, completed in 2019. Since then, MUC has partnered with the Sahitya Akademi, IGNCA and international bodies such as UNESCO’s ICCROM, blending rigorous scholarship with grassroots cultural work.

Reputation and Rankings
MUC is recognised by the UGC under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) and earned an “A” grade from NAAC (Cycle‑2, 2023). In the 2024 NIRF survey it placed 118th among more than 500 Indian universities and was ranked third in the specialised Arts & Culture‑university category. About 62 % of its faculty hold PhDs from institutions like JNU, IIT‑Guwahati and SOAS, London, and each semester 15 % of teaching staff are visiting scholars from abroad. In the 2022‑23 academic year the university published 124 peer‑reviewed papers, edited 17 books and filed nine patents related to heritage‑preservation technologies. Its Journal of Riverine Cultures is indexed in Scopus. Students have taken home top honours at the National Level Folk Dance Competition (2023), the Ustad Bismillah Khan Young Artist Award (2022) and have secured Fulbright‑Nehru Fellowships.

  2. Inter‑disciplinary innovation – Courses blend environmental science, digital humanities and entrepreneurship, preparing graduates to launch eco‑tourism ventures, craft cooperatives and other sustainable cultural enterprises.
  3. Community impact – Through the Majuli Outreach Programme MUC provides free heritage‑documentation workshops to more than 30 villages each year and has helped register 120 new Geographical Indications, including Satrasana pottery and Muga silk.
  4. Global connectivity – MoUs with the University of Copenhagen, University of Tokyo and other institutions enable joint‑degree programmes and student exchanges, opening pathways to international cultural‑policy careers.
  5. Economic contribution – A 2023 impact study by the Assam Economic Advisory Council estimated that MUC generates roughly ₹250 crore of annual economic activity for Majuli, driven mainly by cultural tourism, handicraft exports and knowledge‑based services.

Outlook
By 2025 MUC plans to launch a Centre for Digital Cultural Heritage (CDCH) that will use AI and virtual‑reality to archive and recreate historic Satras. The university also intends to add PhD programmes in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Professional Doctorates in Cultural Entrepreneurship, cementing its role as a premier hub for preserving India’s river‑ine heritage while equipping scholars with the tools to innovate in the cultural sector.
