Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Univeristy Overview

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) was set up in 1973 by the then Government of Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand) as a state university aimed at bringing higher‑education opportunities to the remote Himalayan districts of Garhwal. Named after the freedom fighter and former Union Minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, the university began on a picturesque 400‑acre campus beside the Alaknanda River, close to the town of Srinagar (Garhwal). Starting with just three departments – Arts, Science and Commerce – HNBGU has grown over fifty years into a full‑fledged institution offering more than 200 UG, PG and doctoral programmes.

Key milestones:

  • 1978: Launched first PG courses in Physics, Chemistry and History.
  • 1992: Affiliated 45 colleges across Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi.
  • 2001: Earned NAAC ‘A’ grade (upgraded to ‘A+’ in 2018).
  • 2006: Started professional streams – Engineering, Management and Computer Applications – under the Centre for Professional Studies.
  • 2015: Created the Centre for Himalayan Studies to focus on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable tourism.
  • 2022: Rolled out the Digital Learning Initiative, bringing MOOCs and online modules to students in even the most inaccessible corners of Uttarakhand.

Today, HNBGU is recognised for its strong regional reputation, NAAC ‘A+’ accreditation (CGPA 3.65/4.00, 2023), and a respectable NIRF 2023 rank of 71‑75 among Indian universities. Its faculty of over 300 permanent teachers includes many PhDs from IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi and JNU, and the university boasts 12 UGC Best Teacher Awards, 28 national patents and active participation in UGC‑MHRD funded projects. Alumni are serving in the IAS, IPS, academia and the corporate world, reinforcing HNBGU’s standing as the premier higher‑education hub of the Garhwal Himalayas.
